The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new Pfizer Viagra pill, Pfizer said in a news release. The drug will contain sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, said U. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Richard W. Shire Jr., III, a Pfizer subsidiary.
The approval of the drug came after a Pfizer review of clinical trials of the drug, which Pfizer is now marketing, concluded that the drug did not cause erectile dysfunction. The FDA also found that the drug’s ability to treat impotence did not outweigh its benefits in the study.
The Food and Drug Administration had approved a similar drug, Viagra, which was approved for use in men, but is under a $50 million marketing ban by the drug maker.
The FDA approved the drug on October 8 to treat erectile dysfunction in men who were not taking a nitrate drug, or any other ED drug.
Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, works by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis to help a man get and keep an erection. It was approved to treat ED in about 60 percent of men.
The drug is available only by prescription, and is the only ED drug that the U. Food and Drug Administration will approve for use.
Pfizer is seeking approval to manufacture and market the drug in the United States, which it said will be sold in four U. pharmacies. The drug’s brand name is Pfizer’s Viagra, and the drug is still available by prescription.
The FDA has been notified of an error in the FDA’s review of the drug’s safety and efficacy.
“The agency is concerned about the safety and efficacy of Viagra,” said Dr. Josephine Merkur, a spokesman for the FDA, which is reviewing the approval of Viagra.
“The agency has determined that the benefits of the drug outweighs the risks,” Merkur said in a release.
Viagra has a “limited” efficacy in treating ED and a long-term side effect profile that includes low blood pressure and headaches.
“These factors are also important factors when assessing the safety and efficacy of Viagra,” Merkur said.
The FDA was informed that the drug’s side effects, including dizziness and chest pain, are likely to be severe in nature.
In January 2017, the FDA issued a notice to Pfizer that it is reviewing the drug’s label and does not recommend that it be marketed as a drug for ED.
“The FDA is concerned about the safety and efficacy of Viagra,” said Merkur in the release.
“Our review of Viagra’s label and its clinical trials is ongoing,” she added.
Pfizer is seeking approval to manufacture and market the drug in the United States.
“The FDA has decided that Viagra is a safe drug,” Merkur said.
“The agency has determined that the benefits of the drug outweigh the risks and the drug’s label does not recommend that it be marketed as a drug for ED.

Pfizer has been directed to stop selling the drug in the United States.
